Emma Watson by Lainiexox Emma Watson by Lainiexox
Traditional (water mixable) oil painting of Emma Watson, actress who portrays Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies.

After starting this painting in May 2009, I worked on it intermittently throughout the summer, Thanksgiving, and Winter break. It was after I first tried water mixable oils in media class that I wanted to attempt a realistic portrait over the summer. Technically, this is my second attempt at oil painting, which I really enjoy because of its prolonged drying time.

Admittedly, this is only 90% finished, as the hair is still quite blotchy and stiff (like it was hairsprayed into a windblown shape)... but I wanted to upload this before going back to university for the winter semester. Hopefully I'll be able to work on my hair-painting technique and fix this up sometime in the future, but for now it's done to the best of my ability. I'm quite happy with how it turned out because this is one of the first times I feel like I've caught most of her likeness in a painting.

That's beautiful work. I didn't think it was a painting when I looked at the thumbnail..
Looks great though ! Lot of detail with the different shades and lighting and shadows !

You did an excellent job with this...and oh, how I love process photos! :)
Her eyes especially are entrancing and you did a great job fleshing it all out. A good tip for hair with oils is to use a flat, coarse bristle brush and just drag the paint (more often dry brush than not) using the natural texture of the bristles to simulate individual strands.

Thank you! :) I'm beginning to really love oil paint, and seeing your work over the years have reminded me of the potential of it. Thanks for the good tip, I'll definitely give it a go.

Thanks! I used the same sort of colours from the original reference photo. It was difficult trying to make her skin glow, though.
